Ripping the Perch

If you have ever been in search of the Perch, you know how frustrating it can be trying to find these traveling eater's. Perch do not hang out in one spot for very long. They seem to be constantly on the move. So if your not getting any bites MOVE. That is about the best advise I can give you on finding Perch. Once you have found a school try to determine the direction it is moving and follow it to stay on them. Sometimes you can stay anchored in your spot and the school will be circling an area. It may take one half hour or more for them to come back again and if your patient that's fine. Also take note of where you are at because it seems as though that school will stay in the area and keep feeding from day to day. Now that area maybe quite large so you'll have to cover allot of water to find the school again, but it wont be the whole lake.

Key Essentials

Mobility - Move around until you find a school if you are catching small fish, move and find a school with larger ones. The bigger fish tend to be in deeper water. Try drifting a likely area when there is a slight breeze.

Bottom content - Look for the transition between hard and soft bottom. Look for stony areas that would hold crayfish (a favorite food for Perch)

Bait - Worms, wax worms, hellgrammites, crayfish, and minnows. Important note - keep your bait near bottom. Most Perch are caught within 2 feet of bottom. I like to keep my bait within 1 foot of the bottom.
