HOW ABOUT SOME GILLS

Take a Kid Fishing

                      Blue Gill

Can you think of a better way to spend a day than catching fish? I can't think of one. One fish that can have you out catching all day instead of fishing is the mighty bluegill. Winnebago has some nice ones in it if you know where to catch them at. Boy for such a small fish they put up a big battle. Use ultra-light, micro-light or fly-fishing gear and you will be in for a nice fight. The power in these little fish will amaze you if you have never caught one. Especially when they get over 8 inches, you can have your hands full trying to get them out of the weeds and reeds.

Good places to look for Gills are the shallow weedy bays of Lake Winnebago. Try to find a bay that has several different types of weeds growing in it and a drop off to deeper water nearby, that has a weed line out to the drop off. If your not getting any bites within 10 or 15 minutes move to another spot, if they are there they will bite within that time.

Try using a bare hook with a worm or night crawler hanging below a small slip bobber. Set the slip bobber so the bait hangs right on top of the weeds. Use just enough split shot to get the bait down and bobber to stand up. When the kids see that bobber go down it sends them into a frenzy, (remember when you were a kid). You can also try wax worms and hellgrammites if they don't seem to be taking worms.

A lot of people will go fishing for gills in the spring when they are on their beds, because they are so easy to catch and get to from shore. This is ok, as long as you throw some back and don't keep your limit every time you go out fishing. I know it's hard to throw back a fish as tasty as blue gill are, but if you want to keep catching you've got to let some spawn and bring new fish to the lake.
