Welcome to the Winnebago Panfish Pages. Lake Winnebago is more than just a walleye factory. It also produces some fine panfish in large numbers. I know that panfish are just for kids, right? Nope, they are for everyone, and can make for some exciting fishing. Especially if you like catching instead of fishing. Ever eat blue gill? I like to refer to them as pond candy, in my opinion they are the best tasting fish to come out of any water. Bread them and deep fry'em you cant beat them. What about perch? There's a reason most restaurants have them on the Friday night menu. And if you eat them fresh after catching them you will have a hard time going for a restaurant meal of perch again. If your into the big fish for trophies because they are hard to come by, try your luck at catching 10" plus blue gill. When you get one of these bulls on you'll mistake it for a bass. How about those jumbo perch that Lake Winnebago holds? Go out and get a 13 incher and see if it's kid stuff. These pages are meant to give you some basic guidelines to catching some panfish and to help the kids get interested in fishing. So when the walleye bite is off put away the boards and grab some light gear and go panfishing. Take a kid fishing with youTake your kid's or somebody else's kid fishing with you when you hit the pannies. They like to catch fish or at least see that bobber drop. Fishing for game fish can get too boring for them and they get tired of fishing quickly. If you can get them on a mess of blue gill or a school of perch or crappie, where the action is fast it leaves them with a yearning to want to go back fishing again. On the other hand if your trolling all day with no fish in the boat it's hard to get them interested in the sport. Lets face it the fishery depends on new anglers. Besides with all the drugs and stuff out there it's better to have them on the lake and out of trouble. |
